In 1895, Boston philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of ravaged timberland in North Carolina's Sandhills for roughly one dollar per acre. His vision: a health retreat for middle-class Americans, far from the cares of the world. That vision became Pinehurst.
Donald Ross arrived in 1900 as the resort's first golf professional. He would spend the next 48 years shaping Pinehurst and American golf course architecture. His masterpiece, Course No. 2, is consistently ranked among the greatest courses in the world and has hosted more single golf championships than any site in America.
Today, Pinehurst is home to ten championship courses by seven legendary architects, three historic hotels, a Forbes Four-Star spa, nine restaurants, and the World Golf Hall of Fame. Over 130 years of continuous operation have earned it the title: The Cradle of American Golf.
18 holes · Par 70 · 6,089 yards
The original course at Pinehurst, designed by Donald Ross in 1898. A classic, shorter layout that serves as an approachable introduction to Pinehurst golf with subtle green complexes and strategic bunkering.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,551 yards
The crown jewel of Pinehurst and one of the most complete tests of golf in the world. Donald Ross's masterpiece features iconic turtleback greens, native wiregrass, and sandy waste areas restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2010. Host of four U.S. Opens.
18 holes · Par 68 · 5,155 yards
A compact gem restored in 2017 to recapture Donald Ross's original charm. Shorter but deceptively challenging, featuring Ross's trademark small, undulating greens that reward accuracy and precision over power.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,219 yards
Reimagined by Gil Hanse in 2018, Course No. 4 is a bold expression of pure Carolina Sandhills golf. Exposed sand areas, native grasses, and sprawling cross bunkers replaced the original 25+ pot bunkers. Named Best New Course by GOLF Magazine in 2018.
18 holes · Par 72 · 6,828 yards
Designed by Ellis Maples, a Donald Ross protege, Course No. 5 features the most water hazards of any Pinehurst course. The par-3 14th, known as the Cathedral Hole, is fronted by a pond and encircled by ancient pines whose tops resemble organ pipes.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,053 yards
Designed by George and Tom Fazio in 1979, renovated by Tom Fazio in 2004. The most demanding topographical variation of any Pinehurst course, with significant elevation changes and six tee grounds from 4,200 to 7,053 yards.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,216 yards
Designed by Rees Jones in 1986, Course No. 7 features the most hilly terrain of all Pinehurst courses with 13 elevated greens. The highest slope rating (143) in the Pinehurst portfolio makes it a genuine test for accomplished players.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,099 yards
Tom Fazio's centennial tribute to Pinehurst, built in 1996. The front nine threads through towering pines while the back nine opens up with rolling terrain, wetlands, and Pine Valley-like sandy wastelands. Located on an Audubon Sanctuary.
18 holes · Par 72 · 7,118 yards
The only Jack Nicklaus design in the North Carolina Sandhills. Wide, tree-lined fairways and undulating Champion Bermuda greens distinguish this course from the rest of the Pinehurst portfolio. Features its own clubhouse with 3,500+ sq ft of event space.
18 holes · Par 70 · 7,020 yards
Pinehurst's newest course, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2024. Located at the 900-acre Pinehurst Sandmines site, the layout features native wiregrass, rugged dunes carved by early 20th-century mining operations, and sweeping vistas. Golf Digest Best New Public Course of 2024.
9 holes · Par 27 · 789 yards
Gil Hanse's 9-hole short course, opened in 2017. No hole longer than 127 yards. Walking only, no tee times. Just show up with a wedge and a putter. Deep bunkers and genuine Sandhills green complexes provide real challenge despite the short distances.

Course No. 2 - A Donald Ross Masterpiece
Booked dinner at the 1895 Grille and our reservation was lost. Waited 45 minutes to be seated. Food was excellent once we got a table but the experience was frustrating. Carolina Dining Room breakfast the next morning was perfect.

No. 2 is special but the overall pricing is hard to justify. Our package came to over $1,200 per person for two nights. The Manor rooms are small for the price. Course conditions were flawless though and the history is incredible.

Course No. 10 lives up to the hype. Tom Doak did something special with those sand dunes. The resort itself is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. History around every corner.
